Fetus in the womb.

Fetus in the womb.

The FDA has just approved the use of what is, in reality, an abortion drug that they have innocently named, “ella.”  It differs from the other abortion pill, RU-486, in that it is effective for 5 days following sexual intercourse. Groups such as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America hail the drug as “an important option for women”(1) and deny that it is an abortion drug, considering it to be a form of contraception instead.

Ella works by blocking progesterone activity. While true that such a drug could serve as contraception, preventing an ovary from releasing its egg, it can also prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the womb. For this cause, it can abort a young life that has already begun.

Since ella is being labeled a contraceptive, unlike the RU-486 pill (a.k.a. Plan B), it may be eligible for federal tax subsidies (2), thus breaking the Obama Administration’s promise that federal funding, which is derived from the taxes that we pay, would not fund abortions. Unlike Plan B, ella will require a prescription.  However, the designation as a contraceptive will enable a woman to keep a supply of the drug at home to use at her convenience.

It is conceivable that many women may be duped by ella’s questionable designation as contraception. It could even result in Christian women, ignorant of the drug’s true nature, using the drug as well. After all, popping a pill is such an easy thing for one to do. It is not an invasive procedure like the traditional abortion. Such ease of use could potentially allow a woman to commit murder without considering the true consequences of her actions. They may do this, despite their typical objection to abortion, because they have been led to believe that ella is no different than taking “the pill.”

Why create such fuss over something that, on paper, can work just as easily as a contraceptive as an abortion pill? It is because the Bible clearly teaches that life begins at the moment of conception. Consider the Psalmists words in Psalm 139;

For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them. (Psalms 139:13-16 NASB)

Note that David said that the days of our “unformed substance” are written in the book of God. Surely this is an inspired reference to the lowly zygote and fetus. Thus, God is informing the pinnacle of His creation that life begins at conception. He is telling us that He has ordained our days from the onset of our life.  Therefore, if He has enabled the fertilization of the egg and has seen to it that the zygote will successfully implant in to the mother’s womb, then measures such as Plan B or ella actually circumvent God’s divine plan for each and every individual.

Be mindful of the wiles of Satan and the devious ways in which his servants seek to cause the children of God to sin against their Creator. Truly, the devil is a roaring lion, lying in wait for his prey, seeking whom he may devour (cf. 1 Peter 5:8).
